This tutorial teaches React Native and Flutter side by side. We build the same app (a Notes app) in both frameworks, so you can compare how each one solves the same problem.
Labs Part 1: Fundamentals and a local Notes app Part 2: Connecting the app to a database (Appwrite) Part 3: Authentication, per-user data and publishing Next step: build the same app natively in Native Android Development: Kotlin & Jetpack Compose.

This is a comprehensive tutorial that teaches both React Native and Flutter side by side. We will build the same app (a Notes app) in both frameworks, so you can compare how each one solves the same problem. The tutorial is split in three parts:
Part 1 (this file): fundamentals and a local Notes app Part 2: connecting the app to a database (Appwrite) Part 3: authentication, per-user data and publishing Versions used in this tutorial (checked in October 2026). Newer minor versions should work, but if something breaks, come back to this table first.

In Part 1 we built a Notes app whose data disappears when the app closes. In this part we store the notes in a real database hosted on Appwrite, and we load, create, update and delete them from both the React Native and the Flutter apps.
Versions used in this part: react-native-appwrite 1.x (Expo SDK 57), appwrite for Dart 27.x (Flutter 3.47). Appwrite renamed its “Databases / Collections / Documents” vocabulary to “TablesDB / Tables / Rows”: this tutorial uses the new vocabulary and the new TablesDB service.

In Part 2 anybody could read and change every note. In this last part we add user accounts, make each user see only their own notes (and enforce it on the server, not only in the app), improve the empty state, and finally build and publish the app.
Versions used in this part: Expo SDK 57 / Expo Router 57 / react-native-appwrite 1.x, Flutter 3.47 / appwrite 27.x / provider 6.x / go_router 18.x, EAS CLI (latest).
